Experience the perfect blend of history, relaxation, and scenic beauty with our comprehensive tour encompassing Agios Nikolaos, the Spinalonga Fortress, and the tranquil Kolokytha Bay. Embark on a captivating journey that combines cultural exploration, leisure, and refreshing moments in the crystal-clear waters of the bay.
The adventure commences with a visit to the charming town of Agios Nikolaos, nestled by the Gulf of Mirabello. This town of 14,000 inhabitants boasts a unique feature—the picturesque Lake Voulismeni, believed to have been formed by an earthquake. Take a break at the lake, savoring a coffee or enjoying a leisurely stroll around its shores. The elevated vantage point offers breathtaking views of the town center and harbor. Explore tree-lined streets dotted with shops, providing ample opportunities for indulging in some “serious shopping.”
Next on the itinerary is the iconic Spinalonga Fortress, a historic islet just 850 meters away. Originally fortified by the Venetians in 1579, the fortress is renowned for its well-preserved walls featuring 40 cannons, now recognized as the best-preserved walls in Europe. The islet served as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957, providing lepers with improved living conditions, medical assistance, and economic support. The guided tour unveils the ruins of the market street, hospital, and isolated houses where lepers resided.
Following this historical exploration, the journey takes a refreshing turn with a cruise through Mirabello Bay, offering a one-hour scenic voyage. Lunch is served on board, ensuring a delightful dining experience while taking in the picturesque surroundings. A highlight of the tour is the stop at Kolokytha Bay, where participants can relish an hour of swimming in the azure waters. The cruise boat provides a perfect platform for diving into the crystal-clear sea.
